intro: Sunrise.
2026 is about 2 decades late to the blog party, and I acknowledge that.
The obvious answer to “what is the rhythm?” is that “the rhythm” is a play on “circadian rhythm”, the natural sleep/wake rhythm of humans if we follow the sun’s cues.
With that said, that there’s three main reasons behind writing this blog… one is for the ritual of writing on Sundays (something I did for years but usually never shared) and using this writing to cap my week with with thoughts and observations about life, health, and performance from the previous 6 days.
The second is that I’m finding it really hard to re-trace information that I’ve learned at different times across different platforms over the past decade-plus when I started taking health seriously. Whether the info was a book, blog, or video, it seems like everything is scattered.
The third is to fulfill the commitment to my patients and my community as an educator. According to the statistics (and to the naked eye), health in the US is very bad and accelerating in a worse direction despite more and more information. Here’s a few stats (which I pulled from a slide-deck that another speaker used before me, so I’m sure someone will argue them…):
- The US spends 450% more on healthcare than the military each year.
- The US spends more on healthcare than any other country in the world by far.
- The US ranks 37th for overall health.
- 70% (almost ¾) of Americans take a prescription drug daily.
- 25% (1 in 4) kids are on prescription medication.
- 25% (1 in 4) of women are on an antidepressant.
- 7.5% (1 in 13) kids are on psychiatric medication.
- 1.5% (1 in ~65) of infants are on psychotropic medications.
- The US is 11th out of 11 of the wealthiest nations in healthcare outcomes.
- 34th in life expectancy, 34th in infant mortality, 48th lowest in maternal mortality.
- Overall, our system ranks 72nd as an effective healthcare system.
Clearly, something isn’t working. I could wax poetic about health philosophy, but there’s only one way out – going back to basics… So, what are the basics?
- Sleep
- Sunlight
- Real food & nourishment
- Movement
- Quiet time – reflection, meditation, breathing, prayer
- Relationships – with others, with career/school, with self
- Intangibles – purpose, belief/concepts
I do think that “we’ve lost the plot” (trying to appeal to some young people here), and to correct the ship requires a change in culture within the home unit/family unit, personal responsibility of those who they have influence over (i.e. family members), and most importantly to re-establish priorities.
And everything in The Rhythm is a blog about getting back to those basics.
No paywall, no BS, and hopefully you find it grounded in health principles and in simplicity.
