What your mid-back is telling you

The nerves in your mid-back run between your shoulder blades and wrap around your ribs and chest. The most common thing people feel here is pain between the shoulder blades. It’s the person who carries all their stress in that one spot and always has a knot there.

Your ribs attach directly to the vertebrae in your mid-back. When a segment gets stuck, the rib attached to it can get stuck too. That’s why a deep breath, a twist, or sleeping on one side can suddenly feel sharp.

Then there’s posture: forward head, rounded shoulders, a mid-back that hunches more every year. Telling yourself to sit up straight lasts about as long as you remember to. If the structure underneath won’t let you stand tall, willpower won’t either.

does this Sound familiar?

  • A knot between your shoulder blades that stretching never fixes for long
  • Sharp pain with a deep breath, a twist, or rolling over in bed
  • Rounded shoulders or your head drifting forward in photos
  • Mid-back stiffness after long days at a desk or behind the wheel

How we find the cause: Alignment, movement, spinal Damage

Every new patient gets the same thorough starting point. We test your spine three ways:

Alignment

Posture checks, balance scales, and eyes-closed stability testing to see how your body is carrying itself.

movement

Range of motion through your whole spine, plus how each segment moves on its own.

spinal Damage

Full-spine digital X-rays can show disc changes, arthritis, bone spurs, or old injuries that may have created a stress pattern.

For posture, your PostureRay report is where it clicks. You’ll see your head, shoulders, and hips measured against normal, right next to your X-rays.

From the side, your spine should have smooth, healthy curves. We measure yours and chart it against normal:

MildUp to 15% loss of curve

Moderate15–30% loss of curve

SevereMore than 30% loss of curve

Your PostureRay X-Ray Report shows you exactly where you stand, and we re-measure along the way so you can see progress, not just feel it.

How we help posture and mid-back pain

Depending on what your exam shows, your plan may include:

Corrective Chiropractic Care

Specific adjustments to your mid-back, ribs, and neck, plus spinal hygiene exercises and/or orthotics designed to rebuild healthy posture. Your spine remodels to the loads you put on it, so consistency at home matters as much as what we do in the office. That’s why we also supply orthotics for postural correction.

NeuFit (nervous system + fitness)

The muscles that should hold you upright can adapt after years of slouching. The Neubie helps us find them and wake them back up, so good posture stops being something you have to think about.

What to expect

Feeling better and being fully better aren’t the same thing. Most people notice changes early on. Truly stabilizing a spine that’s been out of alignment for years can take up to 6-12 months of consistency… That doesn’t mean 6-12 months to feel better, it just means that your body needs time to hold the correction so it doesn’t slide back.

Will it hurt? Changing a spine that hasn’t moved in years can feel like a workout at the beginning. If you feel it, it’s usually in the first couple of weeks, and we adapt our technique to what works best for you.

When to get emergency care: Chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, or pain spreading into the arm or jaw can be a heart problem. Call 911.

What our patients say

…an emergency visit with dislocated ribs. After my first visit I felt relief and then became acquainted with the value of the Neubie – a device that fosters tissue healing and neuromuscular re-education. I gladly will continue this path for optimal health for life.

Frequently asked questions

Can posture really be corrected as an adult?

Often, yes, with consistency. Bone and soft tissue adapt to the stress you put on them over time. That’s why correction takes months, not days, and why your at-home exercises matter.

Do posture braces work?

They hold you in position while you wear them, but they don’t change the structure underneath. We’d rather rebuild the curve and the muscles that hold it.

Why does my rib hurt when I take a deep breath?

Your ribs attach to the vertebrae in your mid-back. When a segment gets stuck, the rib can get stuck with it, and breathing moves it every few seconds. See a medical provider first if the pain comes with shortness of breath or chest pressure.

Where are you located?

We’re at 5250 17th St, Unit 101, on the corner of 17th & Honore, centrally located between University and Fruitville and about 5 minutes from I-75 and UTC. We see patients from Sarasota, Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch.
