Why lower back pain keeps coming back

Most people think of a chiropractor as a back doctor. I don’t. A chiropractor is a nerve specialist. We work on the spine because that’s where your spinal cord and nerves live.

Your lower back is home to the nerves that run into your hips, knees, and all the way down to your feet, including the sciatic nerve, the longest and thickest nerve in your body. When the lower back loses its normal alignment or stops moving the way it should, those nerves can take the pressure. Pain is just the part you notice.

That’s why stretching, foam rollers, and pain relievers often feel great for a day and then wear off, because they often only work on the symptom. The structure underneath hasn’t changed.

does this Sound familiar?

  • It’s stiff every morning and loosens up by lunch
  • Sitting at a desk or driving for long stretches makes it worse
  • It “goes out” a couple of times a year, usually bending over for something small
  • Pain or tingling starts to travel into your hip or leg

How we find the cause: Alignment, movement, spinal Damage

Every new patient gets the same thorough starting point. We test your spine three ways:

Alignment

Posture checks, balance scales, and eyes-closed stability testing to see how your body is carrying itself.

movement

Range of motion through your whole spine, plus how each segment moves on its own.

spinal Damage

Full-spine digital X-rays can show disc changes, arthritis, bone spurs, or old injuries that may have created a stress pattern.

For lower back pain, we pay close attention to the curve of your lower back, how your pelvis sits, and the height of the discs at each level.

From the side, your spine should have smooth, healthy curves. We measure yours and chart it against normal:

MildUp to 15% loss of curve

Moderate15–30% loss of curve

SevereMore than 30% loss of curve

Your PostureRay X-Ray Report shows you exactly where you stand, and we re-measure along the way so you can see progress, not just feel it.

How we help lower back pain

Not every back needs the same thing. Depending on what your exam shows, your plan may include:

Corrective Chiropractic Care

Specific adjustments designed to restore alignment, improve motion, and take pressure off the nerves, paired with at-home spinal hygiene exercises and/or orthotics so your progress keeps going and “holds” between visits.

Spinal Decompression

If your exam shows a potential disc bulge or herniation, or if we visualize degeneration on x-ray, then non-surgical decompression on our Chattanooga Triton 6M traction table is used to gently create space between the vertebrae to take load off the disc and the nerves around it.

NeuFit (nervous system + fitness)

Sometimes the joint moves fine but the muscles around it have shut down or stay locked up to protect you, since the brain is used to sending signals to protect and compensate. Using the Neubie, we find where your nervous system is guarding, help you reset those areas, and rebuild strength and full painless range of motion.

MY OWN STORY: “My own back problems started at the end of my college baseball career after an L5 stress fracture, but nobody could tell me why. Chiropractic was the first thing that looked for the cause instead of the symptom, and through a proper exam and x-ray, I had a game plan to heal. That’s the approach that I now try to bring to every patient.” – Dr. Alex

What to expect

Feeling better and being fully better aren’t the same thing. Most people notice changes early on. Truly stabilizing a spine that’s been out of alignment for years can take up to 6-12 months of consistency… That doesn’t mean 6-12 months to feel better, it just means that your body needs time to hold the correction so it doesn’t slide back.

Will it hurt? Changing a spine that hasn’t moved in years can feel like a workout at the beginning. If you feel it, it’s usually in the first couple of weeks, and we adapt our technique to what works best for you.

What our patients say

Dr Alex and his team are amazing. I cannot recommend them enough! He took his time out to educate and show me why I have had my symptoms of lower back and neck pain for years and what we need to do to fix the root cause of it. Since seeing him I have had less episodes of flare up and have been able to live a more active lifestyle again! Thank you!

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an X-ray?

In most cases, yes. We don’t guess. X-rays show us your curve, your discs, and any reason care should be modified, so your plan is built on what’s actually there.

How do I know if I need spinal decompression?

Your exam and X-rays tell us. Decompression is most helpful when a disc is involved, like a bulge, herniation, or degeneration. If it’s not the right fit for you, we won’t recommend it.

What if I just want the pain gone?

That’s okay. Our focus is correcting the structure so the problem doesn’t keep coming back. If that’s not what you’re looking for, we’ll be honest with you and point you toward someone who’s a better fit.

Where are you located?

We’re at 5250 17th St, Unit 101, on the corner of 17th & Honore, centrally located between University and Fruitville and about 5 minutes from I-75 and UTC. We see patients from Sarasota, Bradenton, and Lakewood Ranch.

Ready to find out what’s going on?

Your new patient exam includes a full consultation, nerve scans, digital X-rays, and a PostureRay report, so you leave knowing exactly where you stand.
