What whiplash does to your neck

In a collision, your head whips forward and back faster than your muscles can protect. The ligaments that hold your neck in place can stretch, causing damage that cannot be seen right away. This can happen even at speeds that barely dent the bumper.

Here’s the tricky part: whiplash symptoms often don’t show up right away. Adrenaline masks pain, and stiffness, headaches, or tingling can creep in days or weeks later.

The same can happen during a concussion. If you hit your head or feel foggy, dizzy, or off after an accident, get checked by a healthcare provider for a concussion first.

Our role in helping after a concussion or whiplash is that we focus on the neck, which often plays a role in lingering headaches, dizziness, and neck pain.

does this Sound familiar?

  • Neck pain or stiffness that started after an accident or concussion, even days later
  • Headaches that begin at the base of the skull
  • Tingling or numbness in the shoulders, arms, or hands
  • Dizziness, trouble concentrating, or just not feeling like yourself

How we find the cause: Alignment, movement, spinal Damage

Every new patient gets the same thorough starting point. We test your spine three ways:

Alignment

Posture checks, balance scales, and eyes-closed stability: testing to see how your body is carrying itself.

movement

Range of motion through your whole spine, plus how each segment moves on its own.

spinal Damage

Full-spine digital X-rays can show disc changes, arthritis, bone spurs, or old injuries that may have created a stress pattern. Stress x-rays can show if there is ligament damage, which is common after a whiplash.

After an accident, X-rays help us document exactly what changed in your neck. That matters for your recovery, and it matters for your case (if you were in an accident).

From the side, your spine should have smooth, healthy curves. We measure yours and chart it against normal:

MildUp to 15% loss of curve

Moderate15–30% loss of curve

SevereMore than 30% loss of curve

Your PostureRay X-Ray Report shows you exactly where you stand, and we re-measure along the way so you can see progress, not just feel it.

How we help after whiplash

Depending on what your exam shows, your plan may include:

Corrective Chiropractic Care

Gentle, specific adjustments to restore motion and alignment to the injured segments, followed by spinal hygiene exercises and/or orthotics to help rebuild the curve in your neck.

Spinal Decompression

If your exam shows a potential disc injury in your neck after the collision, cervical decompression on our Chattanooga Triton 6M traction table is used to gently create space and take pressure off the disc and nerves.

NeuFit (nervous system + fitness)

After whiplash, the muscles around the neck often lock down to protect it. The Neubie helps us find those areas and retrain them, so you get your range of motion and strength back.

CHIROPRACTIC STUDENT’S HEADACHE STORY: My first patient while I was still in Chiropractic school had a concussion from playing rugby, and had such severe headaches that he thought that he would have to drop out of school due to not being able to sleep or focus. After a few adjustments, he was back in the gym exercising, studying for tests without issue, and sleeping through the night. He’s even a chiropractor now! – Dr. Alex

What to expect

Feeling better and being fully better aren’t the same thing. Most people notice changes early on. Truly stabilizing a spine that’s been out of alignment for years can take up to 6-12 months of consistency… That doesn’t mean 6-12 months to feel better, it just means that your body needs time to hold the correction so it doesn’t slide back.

Will it hurt? Changing a spine that hasn’t moved in years can feel like a workout at the beginning. If you feel it, it’s usually in the first couple of weeks, and we adapt our technique to what works best for you.

When to get emergency care: If you have severe neck pain, numbness or weakness, loss of consciousness, repeated vomiting, or a worsening headache after an accident, go to the ER first.
